Why families keep LIFAIO close

Automatic Recall Alerts (Member): Your pantry is checked even when the app is closed. If a product you already bought is recalled, you get a push notification — and your whole history is re-checked every time a new recall is published.

Official Emergency Alerts (Member): Civil emergency alerts (evacuations, civil danger warnings) from official government feeds — Alert Ready/Pelmorex NAAD in Canada and the National Weather Service (IPAWS relay) in the United States — delivered for your exact location. Official alerts are always kept strictly separate from any commercial content.

Weather Alerts (Member): Official weather alerts for your location (Environment Canada, NWS, MeteoAlarm in Europe, INMET in Brazil, and Google Weather where no free national feed exists — always displayed with the issuing authority).

Ingredient Label Reader (all plans, including Free): Photograph an ingredient label — no barcode needed. Text is read locally on your device (no AI key, the photo never leaves your phone) and cross-checked against your allergy profile, including hidden allergen names (caseinate → milk, tahini → sesame, E220–E228 → sulphites).

Vehicle Recalls by VIN (Member): Register your vehicles by VIN and get manufacturer recall notices.

Local advisories: See boil-water advisories, utility outages, road closures, and similar local notices with the source shown clearly in the app. Coverage grows automatically too: LIFAIO scans official open-data portals (Données Québec, Canada’s federal open government portal) weekly for new municipal GeoJSON feeds. Clearly identified feeds (boil-water advisories, roadwork) are adopted automatically; anything ambiguous simply stays off.

Community advisory reports: Know of a boil-water advisory LIFAIO doesn’t show yet? Any account — including free — can report it from the Alerts tab, with a required link to the official source. The report is published immediately and clearly labelled NOT VERIFIED — check the official link before acting, with that link displayed on the advisory so anyone can verify the source themselves. Everything is automatic and community-moderated: duplicates are blocked, notifications always distinguish a community report from an official advisory, 5 “lifted” votes retire a community report, and an unconfirmed report expires on its own after 14 days. Official advisories (government registries, municipal open data) are never affected by votes. Limit of 5 reports per day per account.

Lost pets (community): Neighbourhood mutual aid, available to every account: report your lost pet with a photo, last-seen position, and up to three safety notes for spotters (it’s fearful — don’t chase it; it may bite; call it by name softly…). Browse listings within a radius you choose (5 to 100 km). Privacy first — no contact details are ever displayed. When someone taps “I saw it”, they pick from predefined choices (seen just now, taken in at my home, brought to a shelter…) automatically translated into the owner’s language, and the owner is notified in the app and by email. If someone has the pet at home, a proof photo and a consented email contact are required so the handover can actually happen; if it was brought to a shelter or vet, the place’s name is required (with an optional address, pickable from the map) so the owner knows exactly where to go. Every notification includes anti-scam safety guidance (ask for a recent photo before travelling, never pay money, meet in a public place). Listings are visible 30 days (a listing marked as found is immediately hidden) and fully deleted — photos included — after 60 days, and community-moderated (3 reports automatically hide a listing — no manual review involved).

Community-published deals and flyers: Deals and flyer prices on LIFAIO are published by the community: members share the item, the price, the store or banner, and the validity dates. Duplicates are blocked, on-site confirmations extend or retire a deal, and every listing carries the same honest notice: errors are possible — the merchant’s displayed price prevails; check in store. We never republish flyer documents or photos of flyers: facts (items, prices, dates) are free information, the flyer itself is a protected document. The “Where to buy what” comparator is built only from these openly published prices — no scraping, no hidden sources, no promise of completeness.

Merchant Badges: Merchants can earn six positive-only badges (Local business, Green merchant, Truly exclusive, Quality, Cleanliness, Friendly service) — awarded by real users after real interactions, never by the system, and never negative.

Local advisory data comes from official open sources: municipal GeoJSON feeds published under open licences (Données Québec, open.canada.ca — CC-BY and equivalents), utilities’ official open data (Hydro-Québec, BC Hydro), government 511 traffic APIs, and the services’ own official status pages. The source of every advisory is displayed alongside it in the app.

Privacy by design (Blind Index): When you enable automatic alerts, your monitored products are stored as cryptographic fingerprints (HMAC-SHA256), never as readable names. Even our own database cannot reveal what is in your pantry. Fingerprints expire automatically after 90 days.

Allergies stay on your device: Your declared allergies never leave your phone. They are health data, and LIFAIO‘s servers never receive them — checks happen locally.
